Mass Effect IP put on hold by EA, BioWare Montreal turned into support studio

Kotaku is reporting that EA is putting the Mass Effect IP on hold after Andromeda’s lukewarm reception this past March.

Apparently, half of BioWare Montreal, the studio that made Andromeda, is being moved to EA Motive. There, they will help the Motive studio create the single player campaign for Star Wars Battlefront 2 while also working on an open world game IP. The remaining half of BioWare Montreal will continue to work on Andromeda’s multiplayer content.

Back in March, Mass Effect Andromeda debuted to mediocre reviews from critics and fans alike due to its poor story, subpar graphics and some laughable glitches and animations.

So while the Mass Effect IP as a whole is still alive, it does seem EA will be hesitant to bring back in the future. EA has a habit of killing off franchises when things get a bit rough. We’re still waiting on a new Skate game too!

Hopefully this isn’t the end for the franchise that sold millions of gamers (including myself) on the 360 generation when the original game debuted in 2007.
