Ghost Games says Need For Speed 2017 will have offline single player

A sequel to the 2015 Need For Speed reboot is coming this year. Ghost Games confirmed this news today, saying that the game’s single player will be entirely playable offline. The developer says Need For Speed 2017 will feature exciting races against the police (no duh!) and that they are taking into account the criticisms fans levied against the last NFS game two years ago. Ghost Games said:

Let’s finish on one of the biggest discussion points around the last game: always-online. To say that this is a topic you’re passionate about would be an understatement, and whenever there’s a topic that gathers as much attention and feedback from you as this did, we take note.

So, when release day rolls around for the next Need for Speed, you will be able to play through a single player experience completely offline. Before you ask, and we know you will, this does mean you will be able to pause the game. Need for Speed has an amazing history and at Ghost we feel very honored and privileged to be driving it forward. We’ll be speaking to you again very, very soon.

Personally, I am okay with the Burnout-influenced Need For Speed formula. That said, 2015’s Need For Speed wasn’t a highlight for the franchise by any means. Ghost Games has a long way to go with die-hard NFS fans. Let’s hope this year’s game doesn’t just put a band aid on the game’s issues and is a true return to form for a once proud franchise.
