Microsoft no longer measuring Xbox’s success by console sales

Microsoft says they will no longer be measuring the success of their Xbox division internally by how many console units they sell.

They will instead use Xbox Live memberships as a metric to gauge how they’re doing. With Xbox Live Gold having 39 million concurrent users at the moment, they must be doing pretty good!

Does this mean anything for the future of Xbox? It certainly seems like Microsoft is less interested in hardware sales than in the past. They’re keeping Minecraft multi-platform, supporting Windows with more ports of Xbox One titles, and now this. Looks like they’ve turned a new leaf though forgive me if it worries me about their enthusiasm for a fourth Xbox console next generation after all the recent talks of them exiting hardware.
