Nintendo: Zelda Wii U multiplayer will be shown next year
Zelda director Eiji Aonuma just can’t stop teasing fans. Now he’s hinting that the new Zelda game for Wii U, set to launch in 2015, may have some sort of multiplayer. In an interview recently Aonuma had this to say about Zelda U and multiplayer:
The two-player functionality of Hyrule Warriors is actually something that has traditionally been done in the Dynasty Warriors series, but they’ve changed because of the hardware and the second screen on your GamePad. Instead of having a splitscreen on the television, you have one-player playing on the television and one on the GamePad. When I was talking back about making Zelda more than just a single-player experience? That’s something you will see in the future, maybe next year.
Pardon the phrase but shit just got real folks. I imagine the Zelda fan community will react in an over the top way to this tease.
Multiplayer in a Zelda title could be pretty damn good if done right. Imagine a solid, seamless co-op experience with dungeons that require teamwork for 2-4 players. Or even a battle mode using various items and the unique locations/weapons that only the Zelda series could come up with.
Still, I know most fans will be concerned about a multiplayer mode impacting the game’s single player. I have faith in Aonuma that he wouldn’t be trying something new with multiplayer in the Wii U’s big Zelda title if he didn’t think it was pretty damn good himself.
Of course Aonuma could just be messing with fans like when he said that the Link in the Zelda Wii U E3 trailer wasn’t necessarily a boy or even Link at all. Then days later he confirmed that yes it was Link and Link will be a boy this time. So we never really know if we should believe Aonuma 100%.
