Analyst: The “Console is not dead”

With all the doom and gloom about the future of video game consoles the past few years it is refreshing to see someone with a significantly brighter vision of the future.
David Cole of DFC Intelligence doesn’t believe the future of game consoles is as bleak as others do. Cole is up on consoles in the future but less on PC gaming saying, “There’s great data out there on consoles, but not such good data in the PC space.”
I agree with Cole. While I wouldn’t be surprised if the next generation of consoles don’t reach the combined install base of 220 million devices bought like the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii have I do think they will do very well.
At worst I believe there will be some down sizing for console makers, with the outside chance that one of the big three exits the hardware business. I’m not taking bets on who that will be, but I think that the worst we have to fear is next generation consoles reducing to the level that past generations like the PS1/N64/Saturn as far as unit sales.
