IGN surveys gamers to see what they want from next generation devices
IGN is doing so many surveys right now. They discovered that gamers generally don’t mind gay characters in games, and now they’ve gained some insight into what the gaming community wants out of the next generation of consoles.
Much like before the Wii released console gamers don’t seem that interested in the Wii U, or at least in buying a next generation Nintendo console for $300 or more. I think this is mostly due to the inaccurate assumptions by many gamers that the Wii U will be essentially what the Wii was to this generation. Everyone is assuming the Wii U will be slightly souped up Xbox 360 and I really think Nintendo will surprise with this one.
Of course gamers are interested in anything Sony puts out which is puzzling considering the debacle that was the PS3 launch and PS Vita release. You’d think with both of those events being poorly handled that gamers’ interest in Sony consoles would dip even a little bit but it stays atop their list as most wanted next generation consoles.
The thing gamers are most interested in is a graphics upgrade. And while the demo images from Unreal engine 4 looked very good, I think we’re all in for a rude awakening as I believe that graphics are about to peak and we will reach a point where more emphasis is put on how games play and are designed rather than the number of leaves on trees.
I also find it odd that only a small gap separates the amount of those surveyed who would pay $300 or more for Nintendo console than a fictional, non-existent Valve or Apple system. I personally don’t understand why these items were even included in the survey.
Leave to IGN to stir the pot. I do believe Sony and MS will release next generation consoles in late 2013 and that they will be significantly underpowered in comparison to what most people are expecting. I also believe the Wii U will be a sizable amount more powerful than everyone is giving it credit for.
Perhaps Microsoft’s testing the waters with the subsidized Xbox 360 to see if they can sell a $500 console next generation on a contract. Whatever happens, it is an exciting time to be a gamer.
