Sony working on PS4, AMD to provide graphics (Forbes)
By Kevin Douglas Femmel
(Feb. 24, 2012)- I’m honestly surprised this story isn’t getting more mainstream attention. Forbes is reporting that a former AMD employee has told them that Sony is working on their next Playstation home console and that a AMD graphics card will play a big role in the next PS console.
This would be different for Sony as they opted to go with Nvidia for the GPU in the PS3. Both AMD and Sony declined to comment on the rumor, but Forbes points out that AMD’s Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert stated last month that gaming will be one of the trends that provides growth for the company in 2012.
This could be seen as Seifert saying he would expect a new game console with AMD graphics to release in 2012, and when packaged with this rumor you might be lead to believe a PS4 would come out this year. It is important to remember though that the Wii U will have an AMD GPU when it releases later this year. Seifert could just as easily, and is more likely, referring to that.
Sony has said that revealing a PS4 would be a distraction and it doesn’t seem like they will do it this year. Our bet is that they begin teasing the PS4, with possibly a late 2012 reveal at Tokyo Game Show but no release until late 2013.
