Phil Spencer: ‘Not a fan’ of Xbox 1.5 idea

With all these rumors about an upgraded Xbox One and a 4K capable PS4, it might be a bad time to buy a current-generation console.

Microsoft’s Phil Spencer may have said in the past that the company is looking into how they might release upgraded Xbox consoles but he’s also not a fan of introducing a mid-generation upgrade if it isn’t a significant enough jump. Spencer recently said:

I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers. I don’t know anything about any of the rumors that are out there, but I can understand other teams’ motivations to do that. For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it’s reliable, the servers are doing well. If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people – an upgrade

I’m personally happy to hear this. I’m all for a smaller, 14nm APU equipped Xbox One later this year but not one that actually changes too much of the console’s internal processing capabilities. I could see Sony trying to push PS VR’s processing box inside a new PS4 model but I don’t want to see new consoles this early in the generation.

Waiting until 2018-2020 so we can get affordable, really 4K capable consoles sounds better to me.
