Microsoft makes Mojang purchase official

The rumors are true. Today Microsoft announced that they’re buying Mojang, the developer of Minecraft, for roughly $2 billion.

Minecraft creator Notch is stepping away from the company in turn. No word on what Microsoft has planned for the Minecraft IP but they seem to have no plans to remove Minecraft from rival platforms in the near future. Whether a potential sequel or expansions are exclusive remain to be seen.

As is, Microsoft has grabbed up a big exclusive if they go that route. At the very least the merchandising income from Minecraft alone should help cut into their massive Xbox losses.
