Rumor: Monster Games working on Diddy Kong Racing 2 for Wii U

Kevin Callaghan, a former THQ game developer who worked on WWE games, says that Nintendo and Monster Games (Excite Truck, Excite Bots) are working on Diddy Kong Racing 2 for the Wii U.

He says this information is based on his “insider knowledge” so take that for what you will. For the record, I don’t doubt that Callaghan has ties in the industry that would inform of this information.

Supposedly the high sales of Mario Kart Wii and Donkey Kong Country Returns prompted Nintendo to ask Monster Games to make a Diddy Kong Racing sequel after a failed version of the game morphed into Excitebots in 2009.

He says that Retro and Monster Games have been working closely on the game but that Monster Games is the lead developer on the project. It will apparently use assets from Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.

While this is just a rumor, I could see it coming true. Monster Games has been very quiet since Pilotwings Resort in 2011. They did port Donkey Kong Country Returns to the 3DS in May 2013 so they’ve probably only had a full year to work on DKR2 with their full attention.

If this rumor does come true I’d bet on a E3 2015 reveal if not at a Nintendo Direct in early 2015. I don’t know if the game will make it out in 2015 but I sure hope so!

While this may be unrelated, I do find it strange that Diddy Kong wasn’t included as a playable character in Mario Kart 8. Maybe that’s because he’s getting his own game in the near future?
