Rumor: Super Smash Bros to support NFC figurines

According to Nico Wav of French gaming publication GameBlog, Super Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U might support Nintendo’s upcoming NFC based toys.

Wav, who has leaked information in the past relating to Nintendo third party exclusives and Pokemon on 3DS so he has a decent track record though I suggest taking this with a huge grain of salt for now. Wav says:

Si je vous disais que le prochain #smashbros était compatible NFC ! Et que chaque figurine contient tout un ensemble de données

This translate to in English, roughly:

And if I told you the next smash bros will be compatible with NFC, and each figurine will have some data.

This isn’t a new concept at all. Since Nintendo announced their NFC toys last week a lot of people have been speculating that Smash Bros will support them, possibly with the ability to store custom move sets or something else.

The only thing that doesn’t line up is release dates. Nintendo says these NFC toys won’t hit 3DS until early 2015 but will arrive on Wii U this year. Smash Bros 3D releases this summer while the Wii U version doesn’t hit stores until this winter.

If this happens it would point at the Wii U version of Smash Bros getting some exclusive features over the 3DS version at least for a small window as the 3DS waits to get NFC toy support in 2015. That would be a good way to entice those who already purchased the 3DS version of Smash during the summer to pick up the Wii U version too.
