IDC projects 51 million PS4 sold by 2016, $50 Wii U price cut and Kinect-less Xbox One

The IDC, International Data Corporation, estimates that Sony will sell up to 51 million PS4 units by 2016. That’s a lot of next-gen Sony units!

They aren’t counting out the Xbox One. They believe the system will make a “serious comeback”. Part of this will be due to Microsoft taking Kinect out of the system, which Microsoft continues to swear that they won’t do.

IDC says:

The presumed unbundling of Kinect and Xbox One, which should facilitate rough price parity between it and the PS4, should lead to a spike in Xbox One sales; assuming the console and sensor are unbundled in 2015, IDC expects Xbox One to recover and emerge with the largest installed base of any console in North America by the end of 2016

They have some bad news for the industry. They say game sales will decline by 45% by 2016 when compared to the 360/PS3/Wii generation.

IDC expects the Wii U to get at least a $50 price cut by the end of 2014 or early 2015. I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens. Nintendo losing money on every system and it will take some time before costs come down enough to make the $249 price point viable.
