Dual Shock 4 light bar was designed for Project Morpheus
It turns out Sony designed the Dual Shock 4’s light bar with Project Morpheus, their upcoming VR headset, not the PS4 camera. Well, yes the PS4 camera because it is needed to work with Morpheus. Still, this explains why Sony has been so adamant about not turning off the lightbar.
Sony said recently:
The tracking light – it was our department that said we need that on. It was for tracking for VR. And when all these things were coming out six months ago and everyone was going ‘it’s reflecting in my TV,’ we were going ‘oh no’ because we couldn’t tell anyone what it was for.
Makes sense to me. Basically we won’t see a pay off to having the light bar on at all times until Morpheus launches sometime in late 2015.
