Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle revealed and is a fantastic value

Nintendo will be releasing a special Mario Kart 8 Wii U system bundle in the US on May 30th. This bundle will include a copy of Mario Kart 8 as well as a copy of another Wii U game if buyers registered the game on Club Nintendo before July. That means this bundle comes with Mario Kart 8 and a copy of either Wind Waker HD, New Super Mario Bros U, Pikmin 3 or Wii Party U.

This bundle also comes with a red Wii wheel and a red Mario Wii remote. It will come in at the price of $329.99 in the US, $30 above the normal $299 system price.

While a lot of people will see the $30 price increase and get upset. That would be a mistake as this bundle is a tremendous value. Mario Kart 8 is a $60 retail game and depending on which free game you choose, you can get a $50-$60 second free game.

Not to mention the fact that Nintendo will give you Digital Deluxe Promotion points for both games, meaning you could get between $8-$12 in eShop spending money. And I haven’t even mentioned the Red Mario Wii Remote, which retails for $39.99.

So basically Nintendo added $160 worth of content into the bundle, bringing the core Wii U’s price to $169.99. I imagine Nintendo wants this to work as a quasi-price cut without losing more money, since they’ll be offering more for a small price increase. This is similar to how Sony raised the price of the PS3 in 2012 with the super slim to $269 from $249 but included newer games like Uncharted 3 as well as PSN vouchers.

Personally I think this new bundle is a good value for most consumers. Some will see the $329 price and laugh but I don’t think those people would ever be satisfied with the system’s price. At this momemnt Nintendo is losing money on the Wii U so it makes sense that they can’t lower the price while adding more content to bundles. This seems like a really good compromise considering how much stuff you get in the box.
