Switch version of Dragon Quest XI based on PS4 version, not 3DS

Since it was announced that Dragon Quest XI would be coming to Nintendo Switch, fans have wondered if Square Enix was bringing the PS4 or 3DS version of the game to Nintendo’s home console.

At UNREAL Fest in Japan today, Square’s Yuji Hori confirmed that the Switch version of the game runs on Unreal Engine version 4.15. This means the Switch version is based on the PS4 version, not the 3DS one.

The PS4 version uses Unreal Engine version 4.13 so the more recent build of Epic’s game engine may be a reason why the Switch version is taking so long.

It is entirely possible that Square Enix will wait to release the Switch version until they release the PS4 version in western markets in 2018.
