MachineGames explains Wolfenstein 2’s lack of multiplayer

Bethesda’s Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus does not have multiplayer. It harkens back to a time when single player FPS had longer, more substantial campaign modes than recent games like Call of Duty.

The company says that if they had added a multiplayer component to the game it would detract from the single player experience, something they did not want to do. Tordsson Björk, a developer on MachineGames, had this to say on Wolfenstein 2’s lack of multiplayer:

The only way we can create these super immersive narrative experiences is if we can solely focus on the single-player. Having a multiplayer component in this work process would just dilute it all. That’s the danger if you try to do two things at once.

While multiplayer would have been nice, they certainly don’t need it. The past two Wolfenstein games are some of the best FPS experiences you can get on the current generation of consoles. No reason to take away from what has made them so great.

Wolfenstein 2 will release this week on PS4, Xbox One and PC. It will release sometime in 2018 for Nintendo Switch.
