Gran Turismo Sport, Evil Within 2 debut to low sales in Japan
A bunch of significant games released in Japan last week, including The Evil Within 2 and Gran Turismo Sport. Sadly, it seems many of them are flopping in terms of early commercial sales.
Media Create reports that during the week of 10/16 through 10/22, Sony’s GT Sport debuted with 150k copies sold. This sounds okay but when compared to GT5 (430K) and GT6 (204K) it is pretty bad for first week sales for a main Gran Turismo game. Sport is a divisive title, requiring an internet connection for most functions and lacking features from previous installments. For being the first GT title on PS4 after a history of selling PS1, PS2 and PS3 systems, you’d think Sport would do better.
The Evil Within 2, the follow up to Shinji Mikami’s (Resident Evil) 2014 survival-horror game, debuted with only 42k copies sold on PS4. This compares poorly to the first game which sold 124k copies in its first week in Japan in 2014. To be fair, the first game launched on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS3 so it had more platforms.
In other software news, Splatoon 2 sold another 16k units and will surpass 1.25 million copies sold in Japan alone next week.
The PS4 did managed to outsell the Switch by a few units, selling 31,278 consoles while Nintendo’s supply constrained Switch moved 31,092.
