New Yakuza game announced with new lead character
Sega’s Yakuza Studio had three major announcements today that we will be splitting up into separate posts.
The first and likely most significant is that they announced Yakuza Online and Yakuza 7. These two games will be for PS4 and will star a new character to take over the series after the conclusion of Kiryu Kazama’s arc in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. The new main character is Kasuga Ichiban, a 40-year old Yakuza member. He will be voiced by Kazuhiro Nakatani, who played Kiryu’s best friend-turned-enemy Nishki in Yakuza Zero and Yakuza Kiwami. So in a way, the Nishki character is sort of getting redemption. At least I enjoyed Nakatani’s acting as him.
Ichiban’s story is that he was a member of the Arakawa family and joined because of a man in the Yakuza group that saved him as a kid. In 2001 he takes the fall for a crime that someone else in the Arakawa family committed and he goes to prison for 17 years until releasing in 2018.
There are no other details on this new Yakuza, which is called Shin Yakuza (New Yakuza) but I’d be willing to bet it hits Japanese stores before the end of 2018.
The next title is an online Yakuza for PC and smartphones called Yakuza Online. This game will, as the title suggests, focus on online play. Little else is known other than it will be free to play.
