Sonic Mania has 3D special stages inspired by the Sega Saturn

During a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con today, Sega revealed some new details on Sonic Mania, the blue blur’s 2D revival game which comes out August 15th.

They revealed that the game will be a little longer than Sonic 3 & Knuckles, saying that fans will be pleased with how long the game is. They then showed off some 3D special stages. Everything about Sonic Mania looks like what an original 2D Sonic game for the Sega Saturn in 1995 should have been and that’s the inspiration these 3D stages. Sega even says they are designed based on what the Saturn could have rendered back then, obviously with changes for today’s HD gaming.

The closest we will ever get to a Saturn-style Sonic officially.

All in all, Sonic Mania is shaping up very well. It will arrive on Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One on August 15th for only $19.99. A $70 collector’s edition will be sold but sadly no physical retail version of the game is set for release yet. The CE only comes with a download code, along with a Genesis style box and Sonic statue.
