Nintendo will add more social/friending options to Switch after launch
In a statement to Polygon, Nintendo has clarified the friend code situation for Nintendo Switch. It is by no means the only method to adding friends and they promise to add the ability to add friends by just their Nintendo Network ID, like on Wii U, soon. Here is their full statement:
By linking Nintendo Switch to your Nintendo Account, your friends from Miitomo and Super Mario Run will appear as friend candidates so you can easily send them a friend request. Also, we are planning it so that friends from social networking services will be listed as candidates, too.
In the future, you will be able to send a friend request to friends associated with your NNID (Wii U/Miiverse) and Nintendo 3DS.
In some games you will be able to use an in-game interface to send friend requests.
You can send friend requests to those who have played with you recently.
You can establish a friend through local wireless communication.
You can also send a friend request by using a friend code.
It really does seem like Nintendo is sending the Switch out a bit early but then again, launching later this year against price cuts for the PS4/Xbox One and the Xbox Scorpio launch would be hard to compete with. Without the Virtual Console, multimedia features and now without the ability to add friends using social media or NNIDs is puzzling.
Still, its better to have a next-generation Nintendo console today than later in my opinion so hopefully Nintendo adds more social options sooner rather than later.
