GameStop says Switch sales are ‘phenomenal’ and could ‘eclipse the Wii’
GameStop certainly wants Nintendo’s Switch console to be successful and so far it seems to be. It has sold an estimated 1.5 million units globally with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being hailed as possibly the greatest game of this console generation.
Recently, GameStop’s Senior Director of Merchandising Eric Bright said that hardware and software sales for the Switch are so strong, he thinks it could “eclipse the Wii” which had historically high hardware and software sales.
The Nintendo Switch is off to a start right now that it could possibly eclipse the Wii. Initial sales on this have been phenomenal. I can’t give straight numbers, but I can say we’re seeing one of the highest attach rates of software and accessories to a device that we’ve seen in a long time.
While it has only been three weeks, it does seem like the Switch is starting much stronger out of the gate than the Wii U or even the Nintendo 3DS. Price doesn’t seem to be a concern with early adopters and they’re buying up loads of accessories too.
Launching with one of the greatest games of all-time will do wonders for a new console. With Mario Kart in April, ARMS later this spring, Splatoon 2 in the summer and Xenoblade 2, Fire Emblem Warriors and Mario Odyssey releasing this year you’ve got to think Nintendo could keep this momentum up with the right management of marketing.
I don’t think anyone truly believes the Switch will “eclipse” the Wii’s sales but if it can pass the Wii U’s timid 13M units that will be an achievement in of itself.
