Final Fantasy 7 Remake combat will be ‘action-based’ and have cover system

Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed some big changes to gameplay in Final Fantasy VII Remake. There will be changes to battle set-pieces and it sounds like they will be a lot more action-y, whatever that means. Here’s what Nomura recently had to say to Famitsu:

Battles are not command-based, they’re action-based. Regarding cover actions, there are places where they can be done on the map, but they are not required. Because it’s seamless, I showed that there can be actions in response to various scenes. The Guard Scorpion battle has map destruction and a great number of attacks that weren’t in the original, so it has become a significantly flashy battle. If you look closely, I think that you can see that there are a number of missiles are coming down

The cover system sounds like it will work like it did in Final Fantasy XV. If so, I don’t know that I mind personally BUT I could see many of my die-hard Final Fantasy fan friends being upset with these major changes. If they are entirely optional and players can replicate the core 1997 experience, albeit with new visuals than I think most people will be happy.
