Sony Santa Monica hit with layoffs, new IP cancelled

Sony Santa Monica has been hit with some layoffs, reports IGN. The studio’s most recent work was God of War: Ascension for PS3.

Around 50 employees are being laid off in total. SCEA says:

SCEA can confirm that we have completed a reduction in workforce at Santa Monica Studio. This is a result of a cycle of resource re-alignment against priority growth areas within SCE WWS. We do not take these decisions lightly. However, sometimes it is necessary to make changes to better serve the future projects of the studio. We have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease transition for those impacted.

To make matters worse, it appears that Santa Monica was working on a brand new IP and that game is rumored to have been cancelled along with these lay offs.

This comes at a very bad time since the entire industry is barely recovering from the news of Irrational Games’s closure a few weeks ago. Generational transition years are always hard but damn, 2014 has been pretty bad in terms of developers losing their jobs.
