Super Mario 3D World has the worst attach rate of any 3D Mario


Somehow it seems a majority of the 1.5 million Wii U owners in the US have no interest in buying Super Mario 3D World. Maybe that has to do with the game’s somewhat poor reveal during June at E3.

If you compare the game’s sales to past 3D Mario’s the picture gets even gloomier.

Super Mario Sunshine debuted in the US in August 2002, sold 350k copies during its debut month to 2.1 million GameCube owners. That’s 16% of all GameCube owners at the time of release.

Super Mario Galaxy was an even bigger success story. It sold 1.1 million copies during November 2007 to a 6 million Wii install base nearly 6 years ago. That would make for almost 19% attach rate. How does Mario 3D World compare?

It sold 215k, both retail and digital combined, in 9 days on the market in the US last month. There are 1.5 million Wii U owners currently, which means roughly 14% of US Wii U owners picked up the game. What else could they be playing?

The sales for multiple third party franchises on Wii U this year are pretty low so its not like these 1.3 million Wii U owners are busy playing Call of Duty Ghosts or Assassin’s Creed IV. You’ve really got to wonder how Nintendo is going to turn around the Wii U if a mainline Mario game, let alone one of the best games of 2013, gets this reaction from an already small user base.

    Nintendo failed by releasing it so close to the release of major consoles. They would have been better to bring it out a month or two earlier, or else wait until March/April of next year.
