Mutant Mudds Deluxe PC review: Mutants invade your PC
Mutant Mudds Deluxe just hit PC this past Thursday. Renegade Kid was nice enough to send over the Steam version of the game for us to review. This review will be rather short, if you want to know the basics of the game check out our review of the Wii U version from June.
The quick basics of Mutant Mudds for PC players: The game stars Max and his grandma as alien mutants made out of mud invade their home. You’re equipped with a water gun and a hover pack as you venture into tightly designed levels that require precise platforming.
As a whole Mutant Mudds Deluxe doesn’t offer much over the Wii U version. 3DS players will want to double dip for the new Ghost levels, improved checkpoints, and better visuals. The PC version sports the best graphics over all other versions but that won’t be the biggest difference for a game with Mutant Mudds retro inspired art style.
Controlling a game built for consoles/handhelds with a keyboard takes a bit of getting use to at first. Yes, you can play the game with a controller if you choose to do so. Using a keyboard can briefly complicate some tricky areas if you’ve played the game on 3DS or Wii U already. After giving it some time you’ll be able to successfully navigate the game’s difficult but expertly designed stages if you stick with the keyboard.
Mutant Mudds is one of the best indie games in recent memory. It will last about 5-6 hours and you’ll love every moment of it. The music is top notch and will stay with you long after you stop playing. The game world Renegade Kid has created is charming and could have easily stood up against even the best 2D platformers back in the 1990’s. The PC version doesn’t offer a whole lot over every other version but if you haven’t played it you should pick up on Steam.
You won’t regret it. Mutant Mudds is a game that you owe it to yourself to play whether its on PC, Wii U, mobile or 3DS. For PC players who haven’t had a chance to experience Renegade Kid’s stellar retro platformer you should give it a chance. It will be $9.99 on Steam eventually but at the time of this posting is on sale for only $4.99. If you’re a big Steam user then pull the trigger on Mutant Mudds Deluxe today.
(Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham provided a Steam code for the sake of this review)
Mutant Mudds Deluxe is a gem that should be played by anyone with two hands. While the PC version doesn't offer a whole lot over the Wii U version, it should be moved to the front of the line of your Steam library immediately
