Cherry Power-Up in Super Mario 3D World was originally a programming mistake

That cool looking cherry power up in Super Mario 3D World that allows players to have multiple copies of Mario and company on screen at once was born out of a programming mistake during development. Nintendo confirmed this today online. While this isn’t that big of news I find it interesting that such a big mechanic in a new 3D Mario would come from a staff error.

Well actually…we discovered that when a staff member made a mistake with the placement tool and put in two player Marios. Yeah. When we saw that, we thought it was great! So we went ahead and put that in the game.

Super Mario 3D World is shaping up very well and is only one week away. It looks to be overflowing with content and from what I’ve played of the game so far it seems like a worthy successor to the Super Mario Galaxy series. The cherry power up in particular is one of the more fun items in the game.
