Nintendo admitted during their E3 analyst briefing that Nintendo Land hasn’t lived up to expectations. We’re not talking sales-wise because good sales was never part of Nintendo Land’s purpose.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said to analysts that Nintendo Land didn’t live up to Wii Sports as a bundled title that communicated to consumers what was unique about the Nintendo console it was shipped with. Iwata says Nintendo Land didn’t help consumers understand asymmetric gameplay as well as Wii Sports helped consumers understand motion controls.
I would say that “Nintendo Land” has not fulfilled the same role as “Wii Sports” did when we bundled it with Wii.
Nintendo is rumored to be recalling 8GB Wii U systems and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was to put a different bundled game in it. The 8GB needs a bundled game badly as it only makes up 15% of the Wii U’s monthly sales on average.
This is a pretty big admission of failure from Nintendo as they spent a large portion of their E3 2012 conference on why Nintendo Land would be the “Wii Sports” of the Wii U. Perhaps a formal Wii Sports 3 is in the works? You’ve got to think they’re trying to come up with something to communicate why the Game Pad should be important to consumers.
