Rumor: Sonic to appear in next Mario Kart?

Steve Lycett, of Sumo Digital (makers of Sonic All-Stars Racing), hinted on Twitter that Sonic may play a role in the next Mario Kart title. Sega’s desire to get the blue hedgehog into Mario Kart wouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed sold best on Wii U, and Nintendo did just enter a three title exclusivity agreement with them.

Lycett teased on twitter:

The kart racing cross over he’s probably hinting at is Sonic vs Mario in a kart race. Nintendo will be revealing Mario Kart for the Wii U at E3 in just a few weeks.

Perhaps Nintendo contacted Sega and they tasked Sumo Digital with helping out on the development of Mario Kart 8. Nintendo did have Retro Studios help out with Mario Kart 7, so they aren’t against asking other studios to help with the franchise, even if Retro was first-party.

This could also point at Sonic being included as a playable character in the next Mario Kart game. I’ve lost countless hours of my life playing the various Mario Karts throughout the years and Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U will be no different. Can’t wait to see it at E3.
