We posted earlier today about Nintendo President Satoru Iwata saying increased marketing expenses don’t necessarily translate into more hardware sales. It appears that Nintendo really does think this because they’re advertising the Wii U through,…messaging Wii owners about the system not being ‘just an upgrade’.
Believe it or not Nintendo has sent out a message to Wii owners who have their systems still connected to the internet about the Wii U. The message reads:
“It’s time to discover Wii U. Wii U is the all-new home console from Nintendo. It’s not just an upgrade — it’s an entirely new system that will change the way you and your family experience games and entertainment.”
They continue to promote the Wii U in the message. This seems like a rather odd advertising tactic but I can’t say that they shouldn’t do it. This would have been an even better idea back in mid-2012 before the system released.
For whatever reason Nintendo still hasn’t been able to stop the casual consumer confusion over the Wii U. A lot of people still think the system is just a tablet add-on for the Wii. While this is a comical mistake none of us would ever make it is a severe problem Nintendo needs to find a solution to.
Hopefully Nintendo continues messages like this for both the Wii and Nintendo 3DS. They’ve sent out Swapnotes in the past about the Wii U and should continue to do so every time a major release comes out. This isn’t quite the upgrade in marketing I would have imagined, but its a good idea by Nintendo to message owners of their other consoles to create awareness.Nintendo messages Wii owners about Wii U: It's not 'just an upgrade',
