Shigesato Itoi thanks western Earthbound fans for their support
It has been a long wait for Earthbound (Mother 2) fans. They had to go through having the game rated by the ESRB for the Wii Virtual Console mistakenly, seeing Lucas/Ness in Super Smash Bros and years of torment. A rumor would erupt about the impending revival of the franchise and then be debunked just as quickly as it started.
With the release of Earthbound in the west on the Wii U eShop confirmed to happen later this year, Shigesato Itoi sent out a thank you to all the western fans of Earthbound on the Japanese Miiverse community for Mother 2. You can read his message below:
Dear Earthbound/MOTHER2 fans outside of Japan : Thank you for all the requests. They made me very happy. Now with the re-launch, I am looking forward to meet new friends.
It finally worked. I’d like to think all the complaining on Miiverse about Japan getting the re-release and not the west had something to do with it. Nintendo ignored the franchise for years and it appears now they know it could be a good money maker for them because of the loyal, die-hard Earthbound fan base. If there is anyone more happy to hear about its western revival than the community of Earthbound fans it would have to be Itoi himself.
