Phil Fish goes on twitter rant, says second screen never helped anything
Phil Fish, better known for being the man behind Fez, has made some pretty stupid comments about the Nintendo 3DS as a platform on Twitter. Its hard to understand how this rant didn’t come from some fanboy on an internet forum and from one of the more (at times) respected indie developers. Fish had this to say about the Nintendo 3DS:
started playing my first monster hunter game last night. on 3DS. it’s not exactly playable without that circle pad pro atrocity… i don’t understand. why would you even release a game like that on a platform like that? why is it not out on let’s say… vita? you know, the one where you could control the camera. it’s too bad because MH looks like it’s basically phantasy star online but not in space. and i love me some PSO. the whole entire thing was a mistake if you ask me.
also, im so sick of this dual-screen clamshell bullshit. a 2nd screen adds NOTHING. it’s a gimmick. 3D is a gimmick. it’s too bad the vita isnt a bigger hit because hardware wise it’s PERFECT. it has ONE AWESOME SCREEN, and TWO JOYSTICKS. there’s never been a single DS or 3DS that didnt make me go “i wish this was on a single screen”. and i’ve never played any game ever anywhere where i was like “i wish this had a 2nd screen”. and absolutely fucking NOBODY ever went “i wish this had 2nd screen that is smaller and a different aspect ration and touch but not 3D” the gameboy micro was the best handheld ever. i wish nintendo would just make a slightly bigger more powerful GBAM-type thing.
I find it comical that Fish’s struggle to get Fez on the market is well documented in the film Indie Game yet he doesn’t understand why Monster Hunter is on 3DS. Phil Fish clearly went through hell trying to get funding for Fez after years of pressure. So the fact that he doesn’t understand that Monster Hunter is on 3DS because it is far more successful on that platform than it ever could be on the Vita is surprising.
Its his lack of understanding the business side of the game industry that puzzles me. I disagree (as many do) that the second screen ads nothing. Apparently he doesn’t see how having extra space to map items, menus, etc is good for game designers. Perhaps he should take a moment and play some of the better 3DS/DS games out there. I’d suggest starting with something by Renegade Kid.
I also find it sad to see a smart person like Fish throw around the term gimmick like its a bad thing. Everything needs gimmicks, its a simple fact. If we can just get over that we could be adults about these things. The Vita has multiple gimmicks. It has a “console like” experience on a handheld and dual analog sticks. That’s a gimmick if I’ve ever heard one because its trying to emulate console games on a portable device.
Phil Fish is pretty upset at Destructoid. I assume Destructoid posted about his twitter rant and Fish doesn’t seem to like it saying Destructoid is on his shit list now. You should check out Phil Fish’s twitter account. The only type of thing I can relate this huge rant to is former WWE wrestler and current TNA star Kurt Angle. Angle has been known to make some pretty controversial statements on his twitter account. Sometimes he stood by them, other times he apologized. Most of Angle’s meltdowns on twitter have been pretty epic and Phil Fish is certainly competing with him in that regard.
I don’t think Fish is wrong to have any of his opinions. I just find it odd that he doesn’t understand why a game like Monster Hunter is on 3DS and I would think a bunch of other developers would find it insulting that he doesn’t think the second screen added anything to their games. Phantom Hourglass for example has some boss fights that put the second screen to great use among other games like the Professor Layton, Trauma Center series, etc.
This is a disappointing display from Phil Fish altogether. I really liked Fez but Fish does not have the history for me to overlook a terrible outburst like this.
