GameStop: Wii U sales ‘slower than expected’

GameStop is saying that Wii U sales post-holidays are “slow”. How slow? Let GameStop President Tony Bartel explain that to you:

“Following the holiday launch period, sales have been slower than we expected. Nintendo plans on launching some of their biggest IP over the next few months which we think will increase gamer interest.”

I’m very interested to see how close or far away the Wii U is to 100k units sold once the February NPD data comes out today. If its near those 50k numbers or less than Nintendo needs to do something fast. If it managed to stay close to 100k if not more than maybe things aren’t as bad as people think.

Either way I’m betting on Yarn Yoshi, Wind Waker HD (already confirmed for fall), Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D all coming out by the end of 2013. I’d peg Mario 3D for November and Mario Kart 8 for December much like how Nintendo pulled the 3DS up by releasing Super Mario 3D Land on November 13, 2011 followed by Mario Kart 7 on December 4th of that year.

A price cut on the Deluxe model to $299 with another pack-in game (like New Super Mario Bros U) instead of charging cradles would probably go a long way in helping to turn around those system sales.
