You’ve probably heard the rumors of Sony’s next-gen Playstation console sporting a controller that is similar to the Wii U Game Pad. Well, Destructoid is reporting that they have an image of this new controller along with a devkit.
The controller pictured above has a touch screen in the middle that appears to be around 3-4 inches wide and has a glowing panel at the top of it. This glowing panel is likely a means to replicate the motion controls of the PS Move controller, condensing the size of the glowing light so that the PS Eye can still track it.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Sony did make this the PS4′s new controller. It retains a lot of what makes the Dual Shock great while adding whatever fancy idea Nintendo had in the past year, a habit of Sony in the past.
That said, the touch screen display looks far too small to make a difference with gameplay. I can’t imagine playing Zombi U on this thing, the game map and weapon selection would be too tiny. Off-TV play would seem rather pointless on it unless the screen size gets bigger.
I wouldn’t be shocked if this screen ends up just being a fancy way to have extra buttons and isn’t used in any meaningful ways like the Wii U Game Pad. I guess we’ll find out on February 20th when Sony shows us the ‘future of Playstation’.
