Netflix’s original series, House of Cards, has been generating a lot of buzz over the past week or so. Its one of Netflix’s first big original shows and it stars Kevin Spacey.
You may be asking what this has to do with video games. The first episode of House of Cards has some of the most obvious product placement I’ve seen in a long time.
At one point in the first episode Kevin Spacey is having a conversation. When he sits down on a nearby couch he picks a PS Vita off a coffee table. He asks the character he’s speaking to what games he has for it, and that character replies “all of them”.
Spacey’s character then says that he has a console at home that he plays “to relax” and that he really needs a PS Vita for his car.
That’s some pretty obvious product placement. I’m not sure anyone would have even noticed the Vita in the shot had Spacey not pointed it out. Whether this is obvious product placement or just an odd attempt at “natural” dialogue I’m not sure. Maybe Sony decided the Vita needed a new marketing campaign and Kevin Spacey will replace Kevin Butler?
When I find a clip of the show I’ll update this post with it. As is this is a pretty weird way to advertise the Vita, let alone any gaming system.
Thanks to GAF for the heads up.
