Sony released a trailer teasing some major announcements for their February 20th Playstation meeting. The popular opinion is that they will formally reveal the next Playstation home console. I believe this will happen but I think it is important that everyone keep their hopes in check. Why? Because Sony has indicated that they won’t reveal the PS4 at this event.
Sony CEO Kaz Hirai recently told the world that Sony will let Microsoft make the first move in regards to next-gen console announcements. He said:
“Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?”
Either this is a major swerve on the part of Sony or they don’t really plan to reveal the Playstation 4 at this event. There is a chance they could show off more The Last of Us footage and a bunch of new PS Vita games that haven’t been revealed. That would qualify as ‘seeing the future’ if they reveal a bunch of PS3/PS Vita software that hasn’t been announced yet.
We can’t count out the chances of a PS Vita remodel either. The system is struggling to gain sales across the globe so a new, cheaper model would certainly be a major announcement. At this point I’d say that redesigning the Vita and dropping its price is more important than announcing the next Playstation home console. There is plenty of time left for that leading up to E3. The Vita is in dire need of help as it flounders on retail shelves.
I’d hold your horses for now. Sony’s CEO stated only 10 days ago that they weren’t going to make the first move in regards to next-gen consoles. I take that statement pretty seriously. Would they really be going back on their word so soon? If they did it would be one hell of a swerve. Mind you, this is Sony. They don’t secrets under wraps very well. The whole world knew about the PS3 slim and super-slim models months before they were officially revealed.
Maybe we will see Microsoft’s new console before February 20th but I highly doubt Sony knows when Microsoft plans to do that.
Don’t get too hyped up. Keep your expectations in check because there is just as good a chance this doesn’t relate to the PS4 as there is that it does. We’ll have to wait and see. I’m excited but I won’t be surprised when Sony doesn’t announce the next Playstation home console on February 20th.
