Rare was going to kill Joanna Dark in cancelled Perfect Dark sequel
In a recent interview a former Rare employee hints that the company planned to kill off Perfect Dark’s main character, Joanna Dark, in the sequel that never was.
Christopher Seavor, the original creator of Conker’s Bad Fur Day says that the sequel to the original Perfect Dark was originally planned to be a two part story spanning two additional games. He doesn’t say whether this project started on Xbox or GameCube but I’m leaning towards the Cube.
Seavor says that they were planning a ‘really good story’ for the first Perfect Dark sequel. He says that the ending of this Perfect Dark game that never came to be had a cliff hanger ending that would lead into its sequel. He hints that Rare may have been planning to kill off Perfect Dark’s main character, Joanna Dark.
“In fact, the ending ‘required’ a follow up, as it was planned as a 2 game storyline with a cliffhanger at the end of the first. Here’s a teaser.. The Epilogue to part 1 had this title : ‘The Death Of Jo Dark ?’”
It isn’t clear whether Joanna would have really died and stayed dead. They could have been planning a cliff hanger that wouldn’t reveal her true fate until the next game. But it would have been a bold move by Rare to kill her off, and I would have loved to see how they would have handled it.
But we’ll never know as the Perfect Dark sequel he speaks of was cancelled a long time ago.
