Sumo Digital: Mario Kart can learn something from Sonic All-Stars
Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett had some strong words for Nintendo’s Mario Kart franchise in an interview recently.
It’s no secret that Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed and Mario Kart 7 have some similarities, and Lycett says he hopes Nintendo learns a thing or two from their kart racer.
Well I’d say that we’re a very different experience. Not only does the multi-surface play have make it very fresh, but we’re also exploring lots of different SEGA games which really varies the levels you’ll play on. Mario Kart tends to stick to the Mario universe instead.
On top of that the split-screen everywhere mantra means that you can take 5 players all the way through the game, and online, which is a big step up from what’s been before.
What I’m hoping is Nintendo will now have to take a leaf from our game for their next Mario Kart. I think we’ve pushed the genre forward with this game – that and it’s really good honest fun and real gamers games. Try it, I think you’ll love it!
I wouldn’t mind seeing Mario Kart allow other Nintendo characters into the mix, so long as they were not out of place characters like Link and Samus. I could see Kirby, and possibly some Pokemon in a future Mario Kart.
I do agree with Lycett that they’ve pushed the kart racing genre forward a little bit. Not a revolutionary step forward but a pretty good one to say the least. I’m sure Nintendo is working hard on Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U and I’m sure it could be somewhat influenced by Sumo Digital’s game.
