Why Earthbound isn’t on the Virtual Console
It’s no secret that the Mother series (Earthbound) has a very dedicated fan base. For whatever reason Nintendo hasn’t felt the need to make more installments in the series.
Gamers have been wondering for years if (or why not) Nintendo would put the original games on the Wii’s Virtual Console service. If they’ve given up on new games they surely wouldn’t be against some extra money off the old games right? Well its far more complicated than most VC games.
There are a bunch of legal issues behind the scenes blocking the release of Earthbound on the Virtual Console. Reportedly Nintendo of America wanted to change a few things to avoid legal issues years back but NCL just didn’t want to make those changes.
Where the big issue is the Sky Runner song. There would need to be a new song made in its place (as it’s designed for specific parts of the game) but NLC or someone else involved with Earthbound just doesn’t think the work to change it is worth it.
Rumor has it that Nintendo had Earthbound ready to go for the VC but that this legal issue stopped it dead in its tracks five years ago and no progress has been made.
