(Jan. 20, 2012) — Nintendo Network is the new name of Nintendo’s various online services. No longer is the name Nintendo WiFi connection, which was only a little bit more generic than “Nintendo Network”. This was revealed by the picture at the top of the box for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy in Japan. Theatrhythm will also be the first 3DS game to feature paid DLC. You can bet that the Nintendo Wii U, which will release between June and the end of 2012, will also use the “Nintendo Network”. It isn’t clear if this is an all out brand new service, or simply a rebranding of the old one. Considering how improved the 3DS online functionality is over the Wii and DS, it might as well get a new name. Another thing is certain, that if 3DS/Wii U games will have online connectivity as Nintendo has stated they would, you better be prepared for the Wii U to use one universal friend code like the 3DS instead of user names.
